Each month leading up to our regular Seasonal Large Waldorf Doll giveaway as promised...we will be sewing up a few smaller dolls for giving away. This includes not only our Lillipals variety of dolls, but our Swaddle babies.

A bit of a tide-me-over for all of our readers.

Each monthly small doll's name will be inspired by the month in which they were created.

As our February giveaway babe, we have the adorable Felicity.

::Felicity:: Meaning lucky or fortunate.

A bit about Felicity:

Felicity is a wee infant baby girl. She was born in the frigid Adirondacks and she likes to be bundled.

She is just learning to find her body parts, and she loves to bend up her legs to try to grab them with her little hands.

Bringing them straight to her mouth.

Her absolute favorite thing is when her Daddy unfastens her shirt and blows raspberries on her belly. It makes her giggle.

She is practicing sitting up, but falls over easily.

So she prefers to lay on her blanket by the window and watch the birds at the feeder.

Her coordinating layette includes a cross over baby shirt with velcro closure, a cloth diaper, and of course, she is never without her bonnet, as she has no hair yet.

Felicity is entirely handmade by us using our newly developed Newborn baby Waldorf doll package.

Free Waldorf doll dress tutorial

My twin sister Laura is a whiz with a sewing machine. When we had our stall at the local Farmer's Market, she made over a hundred dresses for little girls, aged baby through five years old.

She recently told me how much that she missed sewing up those pretty dresses. Combining all sorts of patterns and colors into the most darling little outfits.

So, what's a good sister to do when her twin reminisces fondly on something that she misses a lot?

She throws her a bag of fabric and a NAKED Waldorf doll and tells her to quit reminiscing and to get to work!

Our girls need clothes after all!

And work she did!

Below you will find her tutorial for making a simple dress for a Waldorf Doll. With full instructions and photos for every step.

Thanks Laura!

This dress, as instructed in this tutorial and using the template... fits a doll with a around the chest circumference of 13 inches.

If you have a larger or a smaller doll, you can easily adjust the template by adding length at the arm pit measurements or the length of the bodice or the skirt.

Supplies:

template for the dress

Fabric

1/4 inch elastic

sewing machine

scissors, etc.

Directions:

Download the template for the dress. Print it... The pattern should print 100% filling the 8.5 X 11 inch page.

NOTE: There is a 1/4 inch seam allowance, while cutting out your fabric, if you need more than this, just increase as needed.

Bodice:

Cut 4 total pieces of this bodice piece. Cut around the red lines as shown in the photo below. Make sure the long edge of the template is on the fold.

Lay 2 of the pieces right side up.

Flip the top piece wrong side up, and place over the other piece as shown.

Cut 2 pieces of elastic with measurements shown in photo below.

Sandwich the elastic in between the two pieces of fabric (as shown), and pin in place.

Sew around the red outlined sides as shown below.

Turn right side out.

Push insides of all corners out with pencil.

Place the elastic over the top of another RIGHT side out piece of bodice.

Place another piece of bodice over the elastic as you did for the first pieces.

Pin the elastic in place to the piece of bodice.

Sew around the perimeter as you did before.

Turn this piece right side out also, and push corners out again.

Skirt:

Cut 2 pieces of the skirt piece (fold should be along the long edge to the left), this will form the centers of the skirt.

Gather about 1/4 inch from the top of the skirt ( shown with red line in the picture below).

Gather evenly along the widest part of the piece.

Place the right side down on the bodice piece (lining up the gathering evenly along the bodice edge).

Pin and stitch the skirt to the bodice at this point as shown below.

This is how it should look now.

Flip, and do the same with the other gathered piece of skirt.

Pin and sew as you did the other side.

This is how it should look now.

Place right sides together, and sew along the red lines, as shown below. Stitching the front and back of the dress together.

Now hem the dress, fold entire skirt edge in approx. 1/3 in.and iron to hold in place.

Then fold again approx. 1/3 in. and iron and pin into place for the entire skirt hem.

Sew using approx 1/4 in seam allowance.

Trim off your threads and serge seams if you desire.

Turn right side out, and VOILA!!!

NOTE: This dress is meant to be put on from the legs up, and then tuck the arms in the armpit holes. Especially if your doll has a ton of hair, as Violet (who's a work in progress obviously...I'm trying to work out her chubby arms!) does below.

And there you have it.

::Jolie:: French, meaning pretty

A bit about Jolie...

Jolie is a swaddled newborn, fresh from her Mama's belly. She was a bit chilly when she left her warm bath and was greeted with open arms and placed upon her Mama's chest.

She quickly tucked her arms and legs up close to her body and was immediately swaddled in her pretty, soft flannel blanket.

On her bald little head, a sweet handknit kitty cat cap was placed.

Jolie is entirely handmade by us using Adirondack Patterns swaddle baby pattern. She is a petite 10 inches tall.

A doll for Finn:: The Pack Family

This family has has brought me to tears more than once.

They have made me think.

They have made me thankful.

They made me hug my own boy a bit tighter.

And for that I thank them.

I came upon this story via a visit to another blog, and then I saw it again... and again. And the more that I read, the more that I felt for this family.

The Pack family experienced the unthinkable... when over the Christmas Holidays, their car was hit by another car on their way home from a party. They were all injured in the crash. Sadly, on Christmas Day their darling baby boy Colum passed away from his injuries he sustained in the crash. He was 18 months old. Kelly, his mother is still in the hospital,, where she has required more surgeries and therapy. Her husband Ryan and their 3 year old son Finn have been discharged from the hospital and are doing well!

Unthinkably, the driver of the other car that caused the accident was not insured and the financial burden of the crash has been placed on the Pack family.

The family has set up a site where you can follow along with their recovery. There is also a place to donate towards their recovery and expenses...here if you are interested.

I have donated to their funding, but I was desperate to give a little something extra. A bit of happiness... so,we decided on a gift for Finn. Inspired by his baby brother, who left him far too early, we have made him a doll. Sweet little Colum. And while it is a small token, it will hopefully bring a smile to his face in light of such a terrible tragedy.

We tried to pick fabrics that were reminiscent of the photos from their site. Something tangible for Finn to recognize about the doll, to relate it to his baby brother.

We also embroidered a heart onto his chest. A reminder of the amazing selflessness uncovered, even in the midst of the unthinkable.

Colum's heart lives on today, donated through organ donation to another child.

What is Windfall Dolls, if it isn't for just these sort of occasions? To be honest...I can't think of a more deserving little one. This doll will be packed up and shipped to the open arms of Finn this coming week.

After watching me make dolls for a long while, my twinnie surprised me by requesting a lesson in doll making.

Are you serious? Let's get started!

I was so unbelievably excited ( and a bit nervous, worrying that she would not like doing it.), that while trying to show her how to tie the thread off, and how to position the eyeline...I think that I flubbed on the faces. They are a bit off kilter and a bit too high.

But oh well, they still look cute as pie!

Doing the hair was a feat in itself. She was oh so patient watching me stitch it into place and quickly took it from my hands to complete on her own.

She finished Little Miss Molly on the first night, complete with the most darling little dress I could have imagined. Crocheted and the absolute perfect length.

She was hooked.

I left her with a bare body to work on alone. Which she turned into the following little lady, dressed to the hilt with a pair of precious purple pants and a tunic.

She is still waiting to be named though.

Here is to more dollies, and a future in creating for Windfall Dolls with the girl that I love the most in this world.

Stirring

After 2 weeks of spending a majority of my days laying in bed recovering from my surgery, I was surprised and a bit elated when yesterday morning something in me began to stir.

The itch to create.

The itch to make.

The itch to sew.

And so I brought some doll bodies that I have been working on to my bed, ready to be stuffed and stitched and helped to come to life.

Two new little Lillipals.

It felt so very good.

Free doll bonnet sewing tutorial...

As promised, we are sharing the bonnet tutorial to finish out the baby doll layette. To go with the cloth diaper tutorial that we shared a few weeks ago. It is a very easy project, and just right for abeginner sewer.

Supplies

Flannel (or cotton if you want) fabric~ OUTER fabric

Fleece or flannel fabric~ INNER fabric

Ribbon

Cut out your two pieces of fabric to the following dimensions. 12.5 X 5.5 inches. ( if you are making the bonnet for a doll with hair, you can add 1 or 2 inches to each measurement length as needed depending on how much hair the doll has.)

Place the two pieces of fabric on top of each other, right sides facing and stitch around the perimeter, leaving one of the long sides open for turning rightside out.

Snip your corners, turn right side out and press.

Cut your ribbon to 24 inches, Place it on top of the bonnet as shown, opposite of the rough (unseamed edge).

Stitch it into place.

Fold the bonnet in half ( right sides together ), so that the ribbon ties are lined up. Stitch the rough ends together at the back of the bonnet. Be sure to stitch through all 4 layers.

I like to use a pinker scissor to cut the rough fabric after stitching, this prevents fraying.

Turn the bonnet right side out, the rough edge will be on the inside back of the bonnet.

There you have it!

We hope that you will enjoy making lots of little layettes for your baby dolls.

Donating dolls ~ Lillipals ~ Tangerine and Rose

Last year, at this time of year, my father-in-law was in the hospital for surgery for his metastatic cancer. The hospital that we chose for his treatment was a state away and I spent weeks there, roaming it's halls, meeting people. While walking the halls I would wind my way towards the children's hospital. I would feel the tears well up in my eyes as I passed little ones in wheelchairs, parents in tears, wilted flowers in need of fresh water. They reminded me to be thankful. How very thankful I should be for not only my own health, but that of my little boy and the rest of my family.

Fletcher Allen is a beautiful hospital in Vermont. It is a teaching hospital and has a Children's Hospital on site where they treat not only premature babies, but children dealing with issues that no little one should have to go through, such as terminal cancer, cerebral palsy, kidney failure.

In an effort to further pass on the love of handmade that is Windfall Dolls, we have made a few new babes who are bound for Vermont. To be hugged and loved by some little boys or girls who are spending Christmas surrounded by not only their loved ones, but the nurses and doctors who walk the halls of Fletcher Allen.

Tangerine and Rose are on their way...

Because giving feels so much better than receiving.

These little babes are made from a new doll pattern that we have been working on. A scaled down version of our big girls mixed with our baby Waldorf Dolls. They are called Lillipals (as in Lilliputian). The clothes are simple and sweet and understated. Patterns and tutorials to come soon.

For our second Windfalls Doll giveaway, we would like to introduce you to Vivian.

We are so happy to give her a new home..... full of all of lots of hugs and kisses and love.

A bit about Vivian.

While we were making Vivian, soon after the preview post, we were having a hard time deciding on a name for this little miss. After a talk with my friend, we decided on one that fits. And so, Vivian was named by her Auntie Heather. We thought that it was absolutely perfect for her.

Miss Vivian.

She is made using Adirondack Patterns. She's a tall one, as she stands 18 inches tall (after adding a bit of length to our templates ). She is made of interlock, stuffing and wool.

She has the prettiest little blue eyes and a quirky grin.

Oh, and those mohair pigtails? They're the only way she likes her hair styled. She says that it keeps it out of her eyes.

Her wardrobe is entirely handmade.

She is a happy little girl and is just learning how to walk. She likes to pad around the house in her bare feet and giggles when she bumps into things and takes a tumble.

She is a very precocious little one and likes to egg her big sister Holly into getting into mischief.

Her pants are upcycled from shirt sleeves, and we left the serged detail of the shirt at the hems.

Her dress is hand embroidered with a vintage crocheted doily.

Vivian loves to play with her baby doll and could sit for hours fishing through her toy basket.

When it's time to go outside and play, Viv puts on her best crocheted boots.

She also keeps warm with her reversible cape.

This new Windfalls Doll is coming along swimmingly. She ended up being a bit of an experiment, as I wanted to make her taller than our normal template allows for. Simply by increasing the height by an inch, We are now working on a beautiful AND taller girl.

And her hair, oh that glorious poof of hair. The yarn is Debbie Bliss Angel and it literally feels like I imagine a cloud would feel... if I could touch it.

It's my first time working with such a fine yarn and it was fun to get to see how it worked out. I found that in the future, I will need to use a smaller crochet hook. After I filled the cap with strands of yarn, I decided on needle felting some roving to cover some bare spots.

After giving her the most darling pigtails, we decided that her hairstyle would be a permanent style. We just liked it so much!

And now, she is busy picking out her wardrobe and accessories.

Welcome to the FIRST Windfall Doll giveaway!

We are so excited to introduce Holly.

Holly is the girl that started Windfall Dolls.

As we slowly brought her to life, stitching and crocheting.... she spoke to us. And every night when I kissed her cheek and put her into the closet with the rest of the dolls that we have made, she would whisper into my ear.

How much she loves kisses.

How much she loves to be held and snuggled.

How much she dreams of sleeping in a bed instead of a closet.

She reminded us that there are some children who don't have a doll to kiss or snuggle and asked that we help in changing that. She asked if we could help her find a happy home with sweet children who wished for a handmade doll to care for and love.

And, so we are granting Holly's wish.

We are giving her a new home..... full of all of those hugs and kisses and love.

A bit about Holly.

Holly is entirely handmade by us using Adirondack Patterns. She stands 17 inches tall and is made of interlock, stuffing and wool.

Her hair is Fisherman's wool mixed with handspun highlights.

Holly prefers her hair in two small braids, but we did leave her hair long and flowing in case that she changes her mind. It can easily be cut to one length.

She has embroidered green tear drop eyes and pretty petal pink lips.

She is dressed in a simple floral dress embellished with vintage upcycled lace.

Her boots are quite rustic in design and are made from a felted upcycled cashmere wool sweater with wool ties.

To keep warm in the chilly weather, we have crocheted her a beautiful wool vest.

Holly is very excited to meet a new friend.

Free doll diaper tutorial

We have had a few requests to share a sample of our tutorials.

What a great idea!

After looking through the store, we decided that our doll diaper tutorial was just the right one to share. We designed theses diapers as a much simpler variation on our real baby cloth diapers. They are perfect for helping older siblings practice or pretend to change their own little baby. It is an incredibly easy project, and just right for abeginner sewer.

Supplies

Flannel (or cotton if you want) fabric~ OUTER fabric
Fleece or flannel fabric~ INNER fabric
3/4 inch ( at least) wide sew-on velcro

Directions
Download and print the Doll Diaper Template. It SHOULD print to fill a letter sized piece of paper.

Lay the template on top of your fabric with the long side on the fold, trace around the template with a magic marker,leaving ¼ inch of margin for stitching.

Cut out one piece of each fabric. Notice that the back of the diaper is a tiny bit wider than the front to allow for the velcro wings and the reach needed to get around to the front of the diaper.

Place the two pieces on top of each other right sides facing and pin together.

Stitch all the way around the perimeter using a ¼ inch seam allowance and a tight stitch. Leave an opening on the top (back) of the diaper for turning right side out ( as shown with the dotted line in the photo below.)

Turn the diaper right side out and iron.

Close the opening by folding it over and stitching once again around the entire diaper perimeter using a ¼ inch seam allowance.

Adding Velcro.

Cut and position a piece of Velcro (approx 5-6 inches) on the front of the diaper as shown. Pin it into place and stitch around the perimeter of the Velcro to secure it to the diaper.

Now flip the diaper over so that you are looking at the inner fabric layer.

Cut 2 pieces of the softer, more pliable velcro (approx 2-3 inches) to stitch to each of the back wings of the diaper.

Position, pin and stitch into place.

Now your diaper will look like this.

NOTE: Make sure that the space between the velcro and the top of the diaper is the same for both the front and the back of the diaper.

This will ensure that the Velcro lines up when you put the diaper on the doll.

In a few weeks we will be sharing the tutorial for a baby bonnet to add to your baby's layette.

Disclaimer: Since we've already received a bit of flack from some anonymous people about sharing these dolls and the tutorials, we felt that we should explain our rationale below.

There are so many gorgeous Waldorf dolls out there. All that you have to do is do a search through Etsy for "Waldorf doll" and you are inundated with thousand and thousands of hits. And they are all stunning and unique and precious. SO many beautifully crafted dolls by some unbelievably gifted artists.

We can't run with those BIG DOGS and to be honest, we have no interest in doing so.

In truth, we love the thought of Mamas creating for their little ones. That is why we spent hours creating our tutorials. We have faith in handmade and in the hands that make them. We have faith in mothers as crafters. There truly is nothing quite so wonderful as seeing a doll that you have stitched and outfitted come to life before your own eyes.

It brings a feeling of old school, of care and love and time. We happen to really like that.

Our dolls are inspired, of course. You can't make a Waldorf Inspired Doll without certain characteristics, but I assure you that our tutorials and patterns for our dolls and clothes are authentic to us. They are ours and ours alone.

We share these dolls, clothing and our series of tutorials not to let some secret out of a bag or to step on any toes of those doll artists. We just want to inspire and make it possible for other Mama's to make a doll for their little ones in case that they are unable to afford one of those beautiful dolls created by the many artists out there.

Do you remember your first doll? Do you remember cradling it in yourarms, swaddling it in a blanket, singing it to sleep? Do you rememberthe love that you felt for it.

How it prepared you for the moment when you would hold your own babe in your arms and know just what you were doing?

We do.

And that is why we started Windfall Dolls.

You see, although we have been asked to do so.....we do not sellour dolls. We DO create dolls during the year and while we love to save ourcreations, we have decided that these dolls need homes outside of our closets. Happy homeswith sweet children who wish to have a handmade doll to love...to bethe recipients of a windfall.

We call these dolls our Windfall dolls.

Windfall dolls are handcrafted Waldorf inspired dolls made withlove and by hand using our own patterns. They are frequently madeusing recycled materials and are always made with care.

Wehave decided to offer our Windfall dolls for giveaway.

Windfall dolls are offered via a raffle – Meaning that if youare interested in the doll, you will leave a comment at the end of the giveaway post. We will randomly choose a winner one week later and contact the winner via email.

See, how easy is that?!?!?!

One comment per household please.

We will holda giveaway four times a year for our large dolls, as the seasons change (with giveaways for other items from our store mixed in through out the year).

Each dollwill be inspired by the season in which they are being given away.

~Autumn

IdeallyWindfall dolls will go to a family who is either unable to afford orunable to make a doll, but the giveaway is open to everyone. All thatis asked is that the winner pay shipping.
